June 2008

It's been a good start to the Summer...

DARRELL, CADE, SHELLEY, RYAN & ME AT NANDOS, FINCHLEY RD 5 LITTLE INDY-ANS SITTING IN A BARREL

The new Indiana Jones film hit town in June and we Hannan brothers (those in London, that is) got together to see it. We met up at Nandos on Finchley Road for a SA-type meal in a massive wooden wine vat (yes, we are actually at a table inside a huge barrel) and then headed upstairs for some Indy action. And enjoyed it very much. How could we not - though we did hate the monkeys. In the pic are (from left) Darrell, Cade, Shelley, Ryan and me.

BACK TO MY ROOTS

We've recently been scanning and digitising old pics and slides before they're eaten by moths or annihilated by global warming/nuclear armageddon/Victoria Beckham's pout. Amongst them I've found this, taken in early 1983 on Cross Kopje looking from Mutare (a small city on the Eastern border of Zimbabwe) towards Mozambique. It was during my 6th Form year at Gifford High School in Bulawayo and I'd been on a cross-country trip to visit a school friend. This was not something we'd been able to do during the war but Bob Mugabe had recently won his first/only democratic election and the roads were safer for the first time in years. Still, we did almost run down two blokes with AK47s while we were there. Luckily, they jumped out of the way before they hit the triggers so all was well.

ON CROSS KOPJE OVERLOOKING MUTARE HILLS
SO NEAR AND YET... PLANE TO SEE

On a stroll through London's Horseguards Parade in early June, i was enjoying the view when I suddenly saw something which made me a  slightly more nervous air traveller. I took the picture just in time. Have a careful look at the top of the pic just above the central tower in the middle. See those two planes? See how they're almost ONE?!?

It probably wasn't as dramatic as it looked. Probably.
