AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER 2004

K AND DAD IN THE WELSH HILLS NEAR BRECON...

My Dad visits us for his first European summer, we buy another car, and Laetitia starts studying again for the first time in seven years. I visit my cousin Carel in Ireland (the first time in years that I've been to a country before Laetitia has) and then head back to the UK to play the part of tour guide for some old friends from Germany...

DAD SURVEYS THE WELSH BORDERS...

HANNAN THE BARBARIAN. Being an architect, my Dad has seen a lot of famous old buildings in his time, but he'd never stood on the turrets of a ruined mediaeval fortress. This glaring gap in his experience of life was remedied with a visit to Raglan Castle on the Welsh border. We also spent a day visiting the regimental home of the Welsh Borderers, the troops who were wiped out at the battle of Isandlhwana during the Zulu War more than a hundred years ago. The Borderers were all from the Brecon region in Wales, and met their end when attacked by a massive Zulu army at the foot of a hill that looked spookily like the Brecon Beacons that towered over their own home town in Wales. See more on that here...

ASTRA TRAVELLING. We decided that we needed a more decent car to add to the ones we bought on arrival in Bristol in early 2003, so we've now settled for a nice 2-door Astra. Ours is a deep metallic midnight blue. With a CD player. And big speakers. Natch.

WITH CAREL IN DUBLIN CATHEDRAL CHURCHYARD

DUBLIN. My cousin Carel lives in Dublin, where he works as a Financial Advisor. We'd not seen each other for about 5 years, and so I decided to pay him a quick visit. Flying from Bristol takes less than an hour and I spent two days with him and his very nice fiance Helen. There was Guinness on the menu, and there was Medal Of Honour on the X-Box. A very decent visit to be sure...
